Dr. Abdul Moin Khan, a senior leader of the BNP, has stated that any effort to bring about unity that results in creating another "Baksal" would not work.
He emphasized that such unity would fail if it led to the establishment of an authoritarian regime like the one that existed under Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the 1970s.
He made this comment while speaking as the chief guest at a memorial event for Atiqur Rahman Salu, a well-known figure in Bangladesh`s river and water rights movement, and the head of the International Farakka Committee.
The event was held at the National Press Club on Thursday.
During his speech, Moin Khan said that while autocratic rule has been pushed out of Bangladesh, true democracy has still not been fully restored.
He stressed that proper reforms must be made to ensure that the people’s right to vote is secured again.
Moin Khan also pointed out that certain political leaders and policymakers in India still find it hard to accept the friendly relationship between the people of Bangladesh and India.
He further added, “We need to organize a third Farakka march to send a clear message to India that we want to use our rivers for the welfare of all, not for harm. We also plan another long march focused on protecting the environment.”
